A Stunning NASA Visualization of the Sun Crossing Over the Moon Set to Debussy’s ‘Clair de Lune’

The Scientific Visual Studio at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has gorgeously combined
the quiet, moving lull of Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” with stunning visualizations of the path of the sun
as it crossed over the moon. The visualizations were developed with the use of 3D global elevation maps and images by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, while the accompanying music was performed by the National Symphony Pops at the John F. Kennedy Center during the celebration of NASA’s 60th Anniversary.

Tropical Cyclone Debbie Looked Massive and Furious From the Space Station

Although tropical cyclone Debbie, yesterday a Category 4 beast, has now been downgraded to a tropical storm carrying a severe weather warning, this footage of the cyclone at near peak intensity captured from the International Space Station will make you glad you don’t live on the eastern coast of Australia.

The eight-minute clip reveals just how furious a storm like this can grow. Despite Debbie losing power when it finally made landfall on Tuesday, the region is still being subjected to intense winds and strong rainfall, up to 20 inches, according to the BBC, leading to flash fooding which can be equally dangerous for residents.

NASA NEW HIGH-SPEED, HDR CAMERA RECORDS ROCKET TEST

This is footage of Orbital ATK’s QM-2 solid rocket booster test taken by NASA’s High Dynamic Range Stereo X (HiDyRS-X) camera.

HiDyRS-X records high speed, high dynamic range footage in multiple exposures simultaneously for use in analyzing rocket engine tests.

Traditional high speed video cameras are limited to shooting in one exposure at a time, but HiDyRS-X can record multiple high speed video exposures at once, combining them into a high dynamic range video that adequately exposes all areas of the video image for comprehensive analysis.

The footage is so sharp it doesn’t even look real.

GoPro Footage Captured During a Spacewalk Outside the International Space Station

NASA has released unedited GoPro footage shot during a recent spacewalk, or extravehicular activity(EVA), outside the International Space Station as part of Expedition 42. The hour-long video captures incredible views of the Earth and the ISS itself as it flies through space at 4.76 miles per second.

Nasa Astronauts and Soviet Cosmonauts are having a Yard Sale

To celebrate the 47th anniversary of the first time man landed on the moon, astronauts, cosmonauts and rocket engineers of the great space race are having a giant yard sale next month– also known as the Bonhams annual Space History Auction. Even if I wasn’t the type of kid that went to space camp and I definitely didn’t pay enough attention in high school physics class,

From Apollo 13 flight plans to Soviet rocket engines, even if you haven’t got a clue what some of this stuff does, a lot of the items look like works of art, never mind having been part of the most significant accomplishments in mankind’s history. The provenance for most of the lot items are listed as cosmonauts, NASA Apollo pilots, ground crew and engineers.

It was only four years ago that President Obama signed into law a bill clarifying the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo crew members have “full ownership of and clear title to” any expendable item used in their missions, and furthermore that the Federal Government will have “no claim of ownership” to artifacts that have subsequently been sold, traded, or gifted by the astronauts. Partly as a result of this legislation, this years’ sale is full of some of the most exciting material to have come to the market

Ever heard the saying “It’s not rocket science!”? It’s often used by smart-asses who know nothing about rocket science. But then again, who does? It is, after all, super difficult. Well, NASA does, obviously, and back in the early 60s rocket science was even more complicated than it is now.

These days you can probably figure out how much fuel you need to get to the moon and back on a smartphone app, and if you want to know the weight of Neptune then you can simply search it on Google. But back in the 1961, scientists at NASA were still doing things with a piece of chalk and a giant blackboard. And believe it or not, they put the first US astronaut into space that very same year, a feat made all the more impressive when you remember that the electronic calculator hadn’t even been invented yet (h/t: vintage everyday)

Star Trek, The Planets & Pluto Will Be Honored on Official United States Postage Stamps in 2016

The United States Postal Service is honoring Star Trek, the Moon, the planets of the Solar System, and NASA’s recent New Horizons mission to Pluto with commemorative stamps in 2016.
The post office made the announcement along with their full stamp lineup for 2016.
