The elections in 2008 were a landmark event in U.S. history, seeing Democratic candidate Barack Obama defeat the Republican candidate for the presidency. With the win, Barack Obama became the first African American United States president and one of the youngest ever to take office. In 1961, Robert F. Kennedy correctly predicted that the U.S. would have a black president within 40 years.
