SAGA

Saga are a Canadian rock band, formed in Oakville, Ontario. Jim Crichton and Welsh-born vocalist Michael Sadler have been the principal songwriters for Saga. Ian Crichton is the band's guitarist; apart from his work with Saga, he has recorded several solo albums as well as sessions with Asia.
The band's keyboardist, Scottish-born Jim "Daryl" Gilmour, joined Saga in December 1979 after Greg Chadd left the band in August 1979 (Chadd joined Saga in December 1978 after original member Peter Rochon left the band to become a full-time music equipment company executive shortly after the band's first album was released).

After the 2003 Marathon tour, Steve Negus announced his retirement as Saga's original drummer. Christian Simpson, a Canadian-American, replaced Negus for 2004'sNetwork album, until sidelined by a neurological condition that affected his drumming. In late 2005, former Helix member Brian Doerner became Saga's third drummer in as many years. Doerner suffered a heart attack in 2007 and was replaced by Chris Sutherland (of the Kim Mitchell Band) for the 10,000 Days Tour and Contact DVD, more recently Mike Thorne has joined the band. Lead singer Michael Sadler left Saga for family reasons at the end of the 2007 tour. Rob Moratti replaced Sadler in April 2008, after an Internet talent search, spanning Europe and both Americas, failed to yield a potential lead vocalist. On January 28, 2011, an official statement was made announcing Michael Sadler's return as the lead singer of Saga. Saga have been awarded gold and platinum albums worldwide and have sold more than 8 million albums.

The Chapters

"The Chapters" is the name given to a series of songs that the band revealed over a 28-year period in a mixed-up order, creating a conceptual puzzle. Each song in the sequence was subtitled "Chapter One", "Chapter Two", etc. In its final form, "The Chapters" tells a cohesive science fiction story concerning the preservation of Albert Einstein's brain, aliens who are concerned with humanity's self-destruction, and the resurrection of the dead through technology.

The first eight "Chapters" were issued, out of order, across the band's first four albums, issued between 1978 and 1981. After a long layoff, Chapters 9 through 16 were issued, again out of order, across three album releases between 1999 and 2003. Songs from the cycle have been performed in concert throughout their career. The Chapters were finally released all together in a 2 CD live recording called The Chapters Live in 2005.

The Chapters is the third live album of six released by Saga in their career. This amazingly performed album compiles live recordings of The Chapters, which were originally released over eight studio albums starting in 1978. The studio versions were originally released over a 28 year period in a mixed-up order to create a conceptual puzzle. The story was inspired by the Cold War, and the preservation of Albert Einstein's brain, which was kept by Thomas S. Harvey, M.D. Also other themes are included such as science fiction, aliens, or the resurrection of the dead through technology.

The Chapters starts full of emotion with "Images", that is actually the first chapter of this "musical theatre" built by Saga. This live album is divided in two CDs with different tones and musical styles, in my opinion. The first CD contains the so popular and so well designed "Don't Be Late (Chapter 2)" made famous throughout the world. When I listen to the album I just feel so bluesy and nostalgic. Although a progressive band, Saga has the rare ability to mix progressive rock with "soft rock" which is so difficult. For me the first half of the album is more progressive, filled with energy. The first eight songs of the chapters are more rock oriented, driving us to a feeling of emotional opening and enlightenment. The voice of Michael Sadler is as usual...amazing.
The riffs and solos of Ian makes any rock fan happy and combine with the great ability of his brother Jim mixed with great drum and keyboard parts. The big moments of this CD are the second and sixth tracks; they are so well performed and maybe the top live performances this band made of both songs.

The second CD is much more emotionally oriented to a more soft rock style. The band's performance stays in a peak just like the first CD. If you love Saga you gotta love this 2nd half of the album. When I remember "Remember When (Chapter 9)" or "Not This Way (Chapter 10") I just feel the emotion behind the story. Sadler is at his best. The top performer in this half is definitely Jim Gilmour showing how great he is. The main feature of the 2nd half is the story behind all the concept, if you can recognize it, definitely you'll love it.

The Chapters Live is a live album by Canadian progressive rock band Saga. It compiles live recordings of The Chapters, which were originally released over eight studio albums starting in 1978. The story was inspired by the Cold War, and the preservation of Albert Einstein's brain, which was kept by Thomas S. Harvey, M.D. There are also science fiction themes, such as aliens being concerned with humanity's self-destruction, and the resurrection of the dead through technology.

Saga has the ability to make you want to rock but also to bring the most nostalgia out of everyone. They are one of the best storytellers I know. Just thinking of their ability to build such a great storyline and transform it into music makes every fan love this band and album even more.
